(2017) Paramedic-Initiated CMS Sepsis Core Measure Bundle Prior to Hospital Arrival: A Stepwise Approach, Prehospital Emergency Care, 21:3, 291-300, DOI: 10.1080/10903127.2016.1254694

Prehospital antibiotics? Kudos to Paramedic Jason Walchok and his co-authors for their innovative approach to sepsis care. Their system used a Prehospital Sepsis Assessment tool that was based on the 2012 Surviving Sepsis guidelines. This tool evaluated four Systematic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) criteria. Acquiring blood cultures, providing fluids, and safely administering antibiotics are addressed in their conclusions. Could this study be strong enough to cause a change in your care?
